Sodium hypochlorite is a 5.25% aqueous solution containing active chlorine. It dissolves both living and necrotic tissues in the root canal system. It is effective against flora and endotoxins that contaminate the root canal system. It efficiently removes debris generated during the chemomechanical instrumentation phase of root canal preparation. It eliminates the organic content of the smear layer during the final washing stage of treatment. Sodium hypochlorite can be used with EDTA liquid and, after thorough intermediate washes, it can also be used with chlorhexidine.
